Before knowing "how touch screen works" let us know who introduced us to this technology.
Man who invented the touch screen is Dr. G.Samuel Hurst and the company who introduced this technology to common man was APPLE in 2007 with their first IPHONE.
Their are two types of touch screens:-
1. Resistive touch screen.
2. capacitive touch screen.
RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN
If you were born after 2010 their are very less chances that you have seen resistive touch screens. because they were mainly found in ATM'S and super market stores.
In resistive touch screen we have two layers of screen and these layers have small air gap. first layer is made of metal and glass and the upper layer is of plastic. in resistive touch screen we have to press harder to make touch work, because when we press harder the upper plastic layer bends and make contact with the second layer and response to touch.

CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN
Nowdays we can find capacitive touch screen everywhere because of their good performance over resistive touch screen. the working mechanism of capacitive touch screen is different as in capacitive touch screen we don't have layers of screen in place of of that we have millions of pores on screen which are connected to each other by electric field. so whenever we make touch on screen the electric field between pores is broken because human body is good conductor of electricity, and when the electric field breaks the censors locate the position of touch and our task is completed.
